TeMix stands for “transactive energy market information exchange!”
In 2009, Dr. Cazalet, our CEO and founder, was invited to serve as co-chair of the Energy Market Information Exchange (eMix) technical committee of OASIS. OASIS is the Organization for Advancement of Structured Information Standards, one of the most respected standards bodies in the world for cloud computing, Internet of Things, and the Smart Grid. There Dr. Cazalet led the development of standards for Transactive Energy (TE). The TE profile of the eMix standards is called Transactive eMix or TeMix. The TeMix standards are open and free. TeMix Inc. was founded in 2011 and named to highlight the role of these standards in its technology.
The TeMix standards use the same principle for transacting energy as for transacting almost everything else: I make a sell tender (offer) for a product at a price, you accept. I deliver the product, and you pay me as agreed. It is the careful, granular, repetitive and automated application of this simple principle that makes the TeMix approach to TE practical and powerful.
Prior to 2009, Dr. Cazalet and his many colleagues applied and honed these same principles to the launch of Automated Power Exchange (APX) in 1998, the world’s first, private, online electric power exchange. The same principles were applied in large-scale generalized equilibrium models of regional electric power markets in the US and models of the entire US and global energy systems for electricity, gas, nuclear, coal and renewables.
Since the founding of TeMix Inc. in 2011, the company has further developed its decentralized ledgers, transaction processing, various Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), and its machine learning and optimization technologies for device agents.
In 2016 under a $3.2 million 3-year grant from the California Energy Commission and in partnership with Southern California Edison and Universal Devices, Inc., an IoT firm, we developed and piloted the Retail Automated Transactive Energy System (RATES) that uses TeMix Platforms™, TeMix Agents™ and TeMix Interfaces™.
TeMix makes electricity transactions easy! ™
Our home state of California and increasingly other states and countries are adopting 100 percent clean energy and increased electrification of transportation and buildings. More clean energy means more solar, wind and storage. More electrification means more flexible electricity devices. The investment in and the operation of many millions of electrical generators, batteries and load devices owned by millions of people and companies will have to be coordinated with the investment and operation of existing large generation, transmission, and distribution facilities all interconnected on a common electricity grid. No longer can this interconnected system be centrally operated by a few parties.
TeMix envisions an electricity future where every party, large and small, invests in and operates their electricity devices (generators, batteries, air conditioners, electric vehicles, and more) for their benefit while transacting with other parties, to buy and sell electricity where the price is known before the transaction and the seller is bound to deliver and the buyer is bound to take and pay for the electricity that is transacted. Aided by “set and forget” device automation and simple, fast transaction systems most parties can benefit if they choose to participate.
Legislatures and regulators will set rules for the electricity transactions including environmental and equity rulemaking. The overall goal is a sustainable grid that is efficient, economic, fair, and clean.

The TeMix Platform™ is our flagship technology using the latest SaaS architecture, deployed on-premise or cloud-centric, to store and forward TeMix protocol payloads (messages) to and from the parties participating in an electricity market hosted on the platform. The primary messages are Tenders (priced offers of a quantity of electricity) and Transactions (acceptance of a quantity of a Tender). The Transactions and other messages are stored in secure structured distributed ledgers hosted by the Platforms. The ledgers can be scaled to record huge numbers of 5-minute, 15-minute, and hourly transactions for millions of parties and their devices. The Platform processes these transactions for scheduling, operations, billing, and analysis.
The TeMix Agents™ perform machine learning to model an electrical device, the systems it serves and customer preferences. The agents also perform optimization to determine the most beneficial operation of the device for the customer or owner given current energy tender prices, forecasts of other variables such as weather, and current data such as temperature, electricity use, and state of charge.
The TeMix Interface™ is between the TeMix protocol and any party or facility such as a Load Serving Entity (LSE), Distribution Operator (DO), Wholesale ISO or RTO, end customer facility, standalone generator, or standalone storage.
TeMix RATES™ is an application of the TeMix technologies. It is a low-cost, complete system for coordinating investment and operations for all parties on a distribution grid.
RATES can support many tariffs (static or dynamic) such as Time-of-Use (TOU), Critical-Peak Pricing (CPP) and Real-Time Pricing (RTP). However, the power of RATES is fully realized using the Subscription Transactive Tariff (STT).
The STT’s subscription element supports customer and supplier bill stability and investment coordination. The transactive element coordinates operation of all electric devices and grid operations.
Importantly, most applications of RATES do not require regulatory or organizational changes such as the development of a centralized distribution system operator (DSO). The creation and approval of a STT for a set of customers is the first step to deploy RATES.
TeMix is now offering TeMix RATES™, the TeMix Platform™, TeMix Agent™ and TeMix Interface™ commercially, initially on Microsoft Azure™ cloud services, along with training, consulting, and support. Applications of these tools can range from transactive tariffs for electric vehicle charging and behind the meter storage, residential, commercial, industrial, and agricultural subscription transactive tariff pilots and full-scale deployments.
